The Uruguayan peso is the currency of Uruguay. The banknotes have both a paper banknote and polymer (plastic) banknote series in circulation. The Banco Central del Uruguay is responsible for issuing the Uruguayan banknotes.
Due to high inflation and instability, the Uruguayan peso experiences devaluation quite frequently. Appreciation is so rare that residents of Uruguay call it “atraso cambiario”, which means “the exchange rate is running late”. The peso has been the official currency of Uruguay since 1993.
